Information about Levelland: (Original and from Wikipedia.org, the city of Levelland website, and www.allacrosstexas.com)

Levelland, TX is located in northwest Texas in the Llano Estacado region, better known as the South Plains. Levelland is the county seat of Hockley County and is known as the “City of Mosaics”. The city population in the 2010 census was 13,542. Originally called “Hockley City” in 1912 by cereal magnate C. W. Post, the name was later changed to Levelland to reflect the topography. The first meeting of county officers was reputedly held at the future courthouse site in a Cadillac. Before long the city had a temporary courthouse (16 x 32 feet), a well, and a community black-eyed pea patch. A post office opened in 1922. The railroad came in 1925 and oil was discovered in Hockley County in 1937. These 2 events plus the eventual start up of South Plains College helped bring prosperity to the area.

The major industries in Levelland are cotton farming, petroleum production, and education. Levelland is served by the Levelland Independent School District and is home to Levelland Christian School, and South Plains College. South Plains College is a premier community college which provides academic, vocational, and technical higher education. Over 9,000 students are enrolled including students at Reese Technology Center and dual-credit students at over 50 high schools in the area. The college’s vocational, technical, and industry specific training programs are relied on by many businesses across the South Plains. Covenant Hospital Levelland is a general and full service acute care hospital located in town.

As for attractions, Levelland has 7 public buildings in the city that feature large mosaics depicting historic and regional themes, thus the title “City of Mosaics”. Also, the Marjorie Merrieweather Post art collection is housed at South Plains College. In sports, Levelland has had some of the top high school and junior college basketball teams in the state. The country and bluegrass music education program and the Tom T. Hall Production Studio at South Plains College are well known in musical circles. Other events include Early Settlers Day in July, the annual Sausage Lovers Festival, the Hockley County Junior Livestock show, and the Marigolds’ Arts and Crafts Festival in November. A notable occurence in November 1957 was the report of UFO sightings near Levelland. Several motorists, (including the sheriff and fire chief), claimed to have seen a large, egg-shaped object sitting on or near the highway. It is reported to have emitted a blue glow which caused their vehicles to shut off, and then re-start once the object moved on. The U. S. Air Force concluded that a severe electrical storm was responsible, but some UFO researchers were skeptical.
